I met Dawn Kelly, Marketing Specialist, on Tuesday morning for a guided tour of the Orangeville Georgian College Campus. We began our morning tour at the Career and Employment Community Services facility which is located in the Edelbrock Centre. At this facility young adults ranging in age from 15 to 29 are offered services and programs to assist them in reaching career goals. As stated in their “Get Paid to Find Work” brochure, workshops are offered on employability skills that focus on such topics as effective communication, resume writing and job search strategies.

Located at 22 Centennial Road is the main student campus. Courses being offered include bookkeeping, general and medical office administration, personal support worker, practical nursing and pre-health sciences. When I walked through the front door I was very impressed by the size and the college campus feel. They have successfully created a welcoming and functional campus that includes numerous student amenities. Dawn showed me the computer lab, lunchroom, student lounge, student resource centre, videoconferencing classroom, offices, quiet study areas and the very impressive six-bed nursing lab.

Dawn Kelly explained that they attract students mainly from Dufferin County which I view as a positive option to our graduating high school students and mature youth who want to enter college once they have decided upon a career path. Georgian presently has 185 full-time and 460 part-time students.

Dawn Kelly mentioned “Georgian College Orangeville offers programs that prepare students for the in-demand jobs in our local labour market. Our faculty bring their industry experience into the classroom to support the student learning. We invite anyone interested in finding out more about the post-secondary programs offered at Georgian’s Orangeville Campus to attend an upcoming Open House, a College Information Night, or call the Campus for a tour.”

Orangeville is truly fortunate to have Humber and Georgian Colleges which together offer such a wide variety of courses. Dawn Kelly was quick to point out that the two colleges do complement each other. High school students should take advantage of open houses to see what our colleges have to offer.
