Week #22 The World According To Wayne White

Week #22 The World According To Wayne White

Having taught in Grand Valley for ten very enjoyable years I was excited to explore the streets of this lovely community taking photos of the colorful painted bikes that have sprung up in numerous locations. The recycled old bikes that have been painted a variety of colors, is a program that has been spearheaded by the local B IA. This initiative began in May of this year.

As I approached I was somewhat surprise to encounter many bikes leading to the Village. Since gardening is one of my many hobbies I was encouraged to see that many participates also added baskets of flowers to enhance their bikes.

BIA is hoping that the painted bikes will become a tourist attraction similar to the tree carvings in Orangeville. City of Toronto had their painted moose and the recent Pan Am Games had colorful horses dotting the landscape in Ontario.

The Corporation of the Town of Grand Valley issued a press release. From that document I quote Councilor Taylor, “As a breath of fresh air, it’s wonderful to see the BIA take on an initiative that provides local businesses with an opportunity to draw more visitors downtown while further actively engaging our rural and urban communities alike in a wonderful community art project”.

The local BIA has taken many steps to revitalize the downtown since I retired from teaching. Benches and trees have been added along the Grand River. Throughout the year many seasonal decorations are added to the mainstreet. My experience from teaching in “The Valley” is that the local residents are very proud of their community. To my many friends at Grand Valley “Keep on Biking!”
