Ice Fishing at Island Lake

Mike and Sheila Mullin have offered me, Wayne White, an opportunity to share through pictures and written dialogue, what makes Dufferin County so special to me. I’m third generation to live in Dufferin County. My mom was born and raised on a farm in Mono and my dad was raised on Second Street here in Orangeville. With my local knowledge and my love of taking photos we are embarking on a year long journey exploring the landscape, activities, fundraising events and people that makes Dufferin County unique. By following the Mullin Group’s website weekly posting you too will discover why Dufferin County is a great destination to visit and live.

We are going to begin our journey by exploring the annual ice fishing derby at Island Lake Conservation Area that just so happens to coincide with the launch of this website feature. The photos clearly show the many blue huts that are available for half day or full day rental by the CVC but also visible are the many different styles, shapes and colours of portable fishing huts that may be purchased at any sporting goods store.

Island Lake is 182 ha is size so there is plenty of space for the 18 CVC rental huts that are available plus privately owned portable tents. The derby runs from the beginning to the end of February. CVC is offering $2500 in cash prizes for the longest Northern Pike, Yellow Perch and Black Crappie.

Derby registration is only $35 for an adult and $20 for a child age eleven and under. New for this year is a 25% discount if you register for the winter and summer fishing derbies.

As the year goes on we will come back to share other exciting recreational activities and events that are happening at Island Lake. Thank you for joining us on our first look at Dufferin County.
